There’s something about picadillo that always feels like home—the savory ground beef, tender potatoes and carrots, and tomato, onion, and garlic simmering together into one warm, comforting meal.
This lighter version keeps all that sabor while making a few simple swaps for an everyday family dinner. We’re using lean ground turkey, a little less potato, and extra vegetables for a meal that’s higher in protein and lower in fat than many traditional ground-beef versions, while still being hearty and satisfying.
Because eating well doesn’t mean giving up the meals we grew up loving. Sometimes, it’s simply about making a few thoughtful changes while keeping the flavors and traditions that make the food feel like home. 💕

🌶️ SPICE LEVEL: Mild
Ingredients
1 lb 93% lean ground turkey
1 tablespoon olive or avocado oil
½ medium white onion, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 Roma tomatoes, diced
1 small Yukon Gold or russet potato, diced small (about 1 cup)
2 medium carrots, diced
1 medium calabacita/zucchini, diced
½ cup low-sodium chicken broth or water
1 teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Salt to taste
Optional: 1 jalapeño or serrano, finely chopped
How I’d Serve It
1 1/4 cup Turkey picadillo + ½ cup beans + 1–2 corn tortillas
Let's Make It
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 2–3 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.
Add the ground turkey. Season lightly with salt and pepper and cook, breaking it into small pieces, until no longer pink.
Stir in the tomatoes and garlic powder. Cook for another 2–3 minutes so the tomatoes begin to break down and create that familiar picadillo base.
Add the potato and carrots along with the broth. Cover and simmer for about 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add the calabacita and continue cooking uncovered for another 5–7 minutes, or until the vegetables and potato are tender and most of the liquid has reduced.
Taste and adjust the seasoning.
Optional: Small Homemade Corn Tortillas
Makes approximately 8 small tortillas
1 cup masa harina
About ¾ cup warm water, added gradually
Pinch of salt
Mix the masa harina and salt. Slowly add warm water until you have a soft dough that holds together without sticking heavily to your hands.
Divide into 8 equal balls. Press each between two pieces of parchment or plastic using a tortilla press or the bottom of a heavy pan.
Cook on a hot, dry comal or skillet for approximately 45–60 seconds per side, until cooked through with light brown spots. Keep them wrapped in a clean kitchen towel while you finish the batch.
Why make them smaller?
Making smaller tortillas at home gives you control over the portion. Instead of giving up tortillas altogether, you can enjoy a couple of warm, freshly made tortillas alongside your picadillo and build a meal that works for you.
Healthy Swap. Same Sabor. 💗
Ground turkey, plenty of protein
Traditional picadillo is often made with ground beef. We're using 93% lean ground turkey to keep plenty of protein in the meal while reducing saturated fat compared with higher-fat ground beef. Prefer beef? Lean ground beef works too.
Less potato, more vegetables
Potatoes are part of what makes picadillo so comforting, so we're not taking them away. Instead, we're using a smaller portion of potato and adding carrots and calabacita for more vegetables, color, and volume.
Flavor first, not extra fat
Tomato, onion, garlic, and chile give this picadillo its savory flavor. Building flavor with aromatics and spices means we don't need a lot of added oil to make the dish satisfying.
Make the tortillas work for you
We're not removing the tortillas either. Choose your favorite corn tortillas, or make our smaller homemade corn tortillas when you want more control over the portion. Homemade doesn't automatically mean fewer calories—the size and amount of masa are what make the difference.
What we didn't swap: the sabor 💚
Tomato, onion, garlic, chile, potatoes, warm tortillas, and that comforting one-pan picadillo feeling are all still here. The goal isn't to turn a meal we love into “diet food”—it's to make a few thoughtful swaps around the ingredients that already make it special.
